Why visit Cereria Subirà?

Barcelona’s oldest candle maker was established in 1761 on Carrer dels Corders, where it remained for almost a century before moving, in 1847, to Baixada de la Presó, 7, now called Baixada de la Llibreteria, very close to Plaça de Sant Jaume.

Cereria Subirà has been declared a Barcelona Emblematic Establishment because it has maintained its original luxurious decoration, which features an imperial staircase, presided over by two iron sculptures of female figures, in addition to cupboards, shelves, drawers and doors with their original polychrome work. The business, which has been owned by three families, has belonged to the Subirà family since 1939 and is the main supplier of candles to the Sagrada Família. Jordi Subirà, its proprietor, is also the president of the Association of Candle Makers of Catalonia.

For the most curious of you

  • Did you know? There are only three historic candle makers left in Barcelona and all three are located in the Old Town. They are Cereria Gallissà, Cereria Abella and Cereria Subirà. Their main customer is the Sagrada Família, even though they have adapted to the times and now also produce candles with contemporary designs.
  • Local’s tip: If you are in the area, pop in for a look. Sometimes you can see the chandlers working on their candles!
  • A must: For lovers of historic shops. This chandlery forms part of the city’s Emblematic Establishments.
